You beat me to it. Kind of dumb to do it around holiday though. :mep:

I still think that one of the biggest demographics for mmo's is college students. From SBR's experience, we're always less active in the summer, more in the winter. And then, duh, holiday season. Not sure when better to release.

Well they really had two windows, a couple weeks before Thanksgiven for the preorder release or a couple weeks before Christmas for the preorders. They really don't want to do it right on the holiday as people will not be a work and they need to be fully staffed for the release.

With the suspension of beta and the new build it clearly got pushed back between the holidays for release.

I jumped for joy when I saw the subject of the email! And not necessarily Arch, release was always (for this year anyway) targeted for the holiday season. Technically, that could've meant new years eve Wink .

This announcement (on a Saturday no less) made my day. Big Grin

Pretty standard subscription model:

Each copy of Star Wars: The Old Republic will come with 30 days of subscription time, after which you have the option to continue playing with one of the following monthly subscription fees:

1 Month Subscription: $14.99 (£8.99/€12.99)
3 Month Subscription: $13.99 per month (one-time charge of $41.97/£25.17/€35.97)
6 Month Subscription: $12.99 per month (one-time charge of $77.94/£46.14/€65.94)

Rather disappointing that there isn't a year sub.

To all of our Old Republic fans:

In 2008, along with our partners at LucasArts, we took to the stage to announce the development of the long-rumored BioWare massively multiplayer game set in the Star Wars™ universe. Over the past few years, we’ve pulled back the curtain and shown you why Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ is the groundbreaking story-driven MMO you’ve always wanted, and how this game will change the MMO genre forever. We’ve given you a peek behind the scenes each week, showing you what it takes to create the largest MMO in development. Our team has traveled the world to give fans a chance to experience the game first-hand, and you’ve created an active pre-launch community larger than we’ve ever seen. Our Game Testing program has been a huge success, and thanks to you we have been able to achieve the BioWare level of quality our fans have come to expect in all of our games.

Today, the wait is truly over – for a release date, at least.

It is our pleasure to finally announce to you that Star Wars: The Old Republic will launch on December 20, 2011 in North America, and in Europe on December 22, 2011. This is an incredible moment for everyone at BioWare and our partners at LucasArts who have dedicated the past few years to build this extraordinary game. We appreciate the patience from the millions of fans who have been waiting for the game’s release. When we launch this groundbreaking MMO this holiday, we hope you agree that it will have been worth the wait.

May the Force be with you,
Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk

Yeah... mixed on Christmas release. I want to travel over the holiday, so that means being gone right away.... and they better hope it is bug free or their employees will be pissed! I would not be happy to have to work over Christmas over the first week of release... why not a few days after?

Ahh.. it will be what it is.. now to plan my final specs for the new PC... was going to custom build it, but found a place online that builds them about the same price you can get the components for... so I may just have them do it!

To be honest I'm really not surprised, figured it'd be a Christmas release since that would rake in the most money

"Rather disappointing that there isn't a year sub. "

I have never figured out why people do this. A MMO can be born, have its greatest momments, and die all within a year. I just have never had that kind of faith.

the only mmo I ever went lifetime sub on was Lotro ... an I rarely play that as it is anymore ... It's a decent mmo an all but it's not worth it for the lifetime . Although for the three years I played it off an on , it worked out I gotten my monies worth long before it went free to play .

Tor I like the idea of paying month to month , unless thier's some sort of price break that entices me to pay quarterly or by 6 months at a time ...

cheers .

Well, $12 cheaper for the 6 month sub. I can see this game going for at least 6 months.

Meh, I was hoping they'd push it off until spring so I could have time to save for a new desktop, then for the game. =P

Since I've got an AMD 64 w/AGP graphics slot I'll have to pretty much rebuild from scratch. Best I could scrap together for a decent rig on newegg was about $500.

Sweet

Yeah I was doing some more research today, it looks like I could. I actually could just get Phenom II and an assus mobo with HD4250 graphix internal (just to tide me over and let me save up for a good card) and then some ram. I've got a 500w power supply and a case already, as well as caviar black hd.
