RP-PVP servers still possible

#1
Got this message from Stephen Reid in my swtor.com PM box when I asked him if there will be RP-PVP servers and he quotes.

----

We have also not announced our final server types for launch; the types listed in the Guild HQ were a general guideline to help us place guilds during our Alignment and Deployment phase. So you may still get an RP-PvP server.

I'll still be staying with an RP-PvE or straight PvE server, no PvP server at all for me, regardless if it's setup as extended PvP areas, that means less areas I can go to and will limit me in the game. Sorry, but that's how I feel about that

you need good roleplay and PVP and balance it all out, for once I want to try something different that isn't PVE, don't get me wrong PVE is great but it seems PVP is the more popular choice for not only from players from starsider (which also favors roleplayers and PVP all in one server) but to the majority of online players period, pve/pvp zoning areas just doesn't cut it anymore, we did that once already in SWG something more is needed, but above all else I think RP-PVP server is the best way to go it just feels more meaningful.

Sorry Cill , but a purely pvp based server is a game breaker for me . rp-pvp what ever handle you want to put on it . It's going to water down to being ganked 24/7 by 9 year olds with fast computers ,and no life trekkies who live in there parents basement ... This isn't my idea of fun . If I wish to participate into some sort of balanced pvp like what's been discussed with the hot spot areas . Fine it's an optional outlet . It's not a requirement . If mmo's require PVP to have a player base . I'll stick to unreal tourny , an other arena's for that .

Cill, I think your completely missing the point of what I'm saying, and what Kat is saying as well. PvP servers are NOT fun for everyone, yes there's people that love that kind of thing, but there are also people who don't. Myself, and Kat, are among the people who don't. If we're going to PvP then we want the choice, and don't want to be limited to where we can and cannot go because of it.

If their going to do it WoW style, then your flagged PvP all the time, and cannot shut it off, even in the tutorial, and that means getting ganked constantly while trying to do quests to level up, and that's not fun at all, in fact it pisses me off completely. So even if Saber Wing goes to a PvP server, I'm sorry, but I won't be there.

As has been mentioned before, it's a moot point to even try and discuss what kind of server we're going to go to, as they haven't even really said how it's all going to be setup, therefore at the moment, it's PvE until more details are released, so please, stop pushing for this until that time, it's starting to get on people's nerves.

Guys, pointless arguement until we actually have info about the pvp system.

I highly doubt they will ever have open pvp servers, this just isnt that kind of game. I actually don't see them having any different rules from one server to another. They will have different locations and that is what we need to put thought into.

PVP areas or hot spots is not fun, if I seen my enemy anywhere in the galaxy and i'm unable to attack them freely then it is meaningless, based on the story that has been given by bioware we need a pvp environment that is suited in all areas not just hot spots, that doesn't mean PVP can't be fun, bioware has added a unique twist to the pvp system, instead of getting ganked you can actually be the hero and overcome the odds against two opponents or more.

After playing lotro, I actually find zoned pvp to be my favorite. And I am pretty sure that's how the tor servers will be set up. You can still have a popular pvp rating for the server with it still being pve. And I say it will be zoned, for the simple fact that nobody is going to want to run around half a planet to get to a mission because there is a hot spot in between them and the mission. It's just not gaming etiquette Smile

Servers focused on pvp tend to have tons of grief, and qq parties. More or less, I just find it to dramatic for my taste.

if there is dedicated pvp , there will be dedicated gank squads that swarm you with over whelming numbers .... It happens in wow all the time . It happens in every mmo with rp -pvp , pvp servers in every mmo . If you think other wise your dellusional . Full time pvp sucks . It gets old fast and a total waste of time . I like the way it's done in Lotro . It's instanced and zoned . you go in you roll the dice you takes your chances . Sometimes you win an some times you get slaughtered it's the nature of the beast . BUT you have the option to participate . The system turbine came up with for pvp in lotro works , it's solid . and it can be alot of fun .

An starsider swg server is a bad example to use . It's offically listed as a pve server . It has a rp community on it . It also has some the games better versed pvpers on it . they organize events for both . There's balance an a general sense of fair play rule everyone abides by . Those who violate the unwritten codes of honor find themselves with no friends and alone .

In Tor , I want to be able to go do a quest / mission / whatever .... where I have to collect those 100 plants for a potion or kill a camp of mobs etc . An not have the hassles nor grieving A holes out to kill you every time you log into the game . Ohh an don't think for a moment same factioned players won't train you with mobs so they can do the same quest your trying to do . It's a free for all everyone is out to kill you enviorment in pvp .

bottom line I like the concept of contested planets your fighting for control of , example Alderaan . Your fighting for something more then a simple title of hi I killed 500 people in pvp so I'm bad ass mofo . I'm pretty sure there will be some sort of factional perk for taking control of a contested world and holding it . It's restuss but on a planetry scale . If you don't care / want pvp you don't go to that contested world .

I agree that full time pvp is a bad idea. I disagree that having more pvp zones is bad. THose are the servers that will stay alive the longest. Eve does it right. There is pleanty to do in PvE space, but the money is better in PvP space. It doesn't mean that its full time ganking. It just means you watch yourself, which adds a great dimension to the game. Its why EvE is growing after 5 years while other games are dying. Anything that introduces more reasonable risk/reward situations makes the game better. It makes the players smarter, and no AI can compete with a human. Griefing is bad. Keeping everyone on their toes is great.

However no developer besides CCP will make that leap, even though its paid off in spades for them. Until you are willing to tell the carebears, sorry, bugging some AI is not worth as much loot as killing a player, MMOs will fail in the experience department.

Cill, while I agree that pvp servers can be exciting, full time just won't work for most of us. My wife for example is new to MMO's and she would not enjoy some asshole killing her over and over while she is questing. It would turn her off from MMO's for good. I'm sure she isn't alone in that either. You can count on me to be frontline right next to you and our fellow sabers kicking imperial tail in a zone dedicated to it, but for the sake of everyone involved I suggest we stick to PvE. Regardless, as Arch said, we don't know what the layout even looks like yet, but my guess is something similar to SWG. Which was fine for us for years.

(But If you do insist on PvP servers, I'll make an alt on one and join you from time to time. No denying that it can be fun on occasion.)
