Which is why black lightsabers aren't really feasible. The only time one has appeared is as a gimmick for TFU, and even then it's only in the game and not in the canon fiction surrounding the game.

Umm....Nis...

You are correct that black is caused by the absorption of light (as in what we see at night when we gaze toward the heavens).

But black as a COLOR, is caused by many many colors being mixed together. Which, in the case of a crystal is most feasable, where each new crystaline structure developed with a new color. In which case, we would be passing light through a multi-colored crystal creating a black color for the blade.

Damn Hanak... you are going against the physics.. Black is the color when there is no light... black absorps light so it looks like it is black... but in fact is not a colour at all, white is the color that has all the light facets or spectrum combined into one, black is just black... look at it like a black hole in the universe... it is black because it absorps all light with gravity.

so well making a black light rod technically is imposible, you can make a close look alike by mixing 3 colours in the right amount so it seem black but it would still not be black as in black is black absorping all light which makes it appear as black.

You guys can not be seriously arguing about this stuff. Losers :mep:

Color or light in science

NighttimeBlack can be defined as the visual impression experienced when no visible light reaches the eye. (This makes a contrast with whiteness, the impression of any combination of colors of light that equally stimulates all three types of color-sensitive visual receptors.)

Pigments that absorb light rather than reflect it back to the eye "look black". A black pigment can, however, result from a combination of several pigments that collectively absorb all colors. If appropriate proportions of three primary pigments are mixed, the result reflects so little light as to be called "black".

This provides two superficially opposite but actually complementary descriptions of black. Black is the lack of all colors of light, or an exhaustive combination of multiple colors of pigment. See also Primary colors

And we know Wikipedia doesn't lie.

I second this... I mean, I just bought Leader Class Megatron from the new animated series, but jeeze guys, your actually beating me with your geekness on arguing if it would be possible to have a lightsaber with a black blade.....

Just cause the history channel did a whole show on star wars tech doesn't make it ok. It was basically an hour long commercial for the dvd set.

Light is photons and a lack of photons is black. Mixing color pigments until no light is reflected shouldn't be seen as a combination of all colors equals black rather a pigment is the absorption of all colors but one and when mixing the light absorption of all those different colors you get the absorption all photons, hence black. The mixing of all the colors on the color wheel to get black is a problem with perception of color and knowledge of how color works. Mixing color pigments is a subtraction not an addition.

So yes, you can't have a black light saber. The very name itself suggest there is light and a black light saber is what you get in a dark room with the thing turned off.

Black contrast to white 100% because it is the 100% opposite of each other all colors in one and black empty space for the human eye, or rather what absorps all light as it is due to the way the light comes down in different forms of waves from the stars.. eg. the Sun.

Yes you can create a black color using certain colors... but it is not really black as in True black really contains no color.

There is alot of variants of black though that has been artificially made by adding other stuff... so it varies in how much it shines.. or not due to a layer of build in clear paint or the likes.

So then its not possible to have a black lightsaber, but what about just a black-saber? a projected energy blade which absorbs all light?

It would look kinda funny, and may be physically impossible, but lets not try to combine physics and star-wars, the two are not directly compatible.

He wanted to know why it wouldn't be possible =p

We would be using light to project through the crystal, therefore a lightsaber with a black -pigmented- blade. But truly, we'd just call it a black lightsaber; because we can agree, for all intents and purposes, we could have a 'black' (as in the combination of multiple colors to obtain this pigment) blade. Whether the current naming of lightsabers by their blade color be a mis-nomer, I don't know but I may think so.

Lightsaber blades aren't "painted" with a pigment. Once you pass light through a series of crystals to reach "black" there isn't any light to do anything in the lightsaber with. You'd be focusing nothing at that point.
